If there’s one thing Ree Drummond knows best, it’s stick-to-your-ribs cooking, and her Dark Chocolate Brownies are no exception.
The Pioneer Woman’s take on the popular dessert is decadent to say the least—even by her own standards. “Warning: Have a gallon of milk standing by,” she wrote on Facebook. “They’re ultra-rich!”
A quick perusal of her online recipe reveals a fairly simple, straightforward formulation. You can do it all in one pot and it takes just a few minutes. So, what’s her secret for maximum fudginess? It turns out that it’s not what she adds to her brownies, but what she doesn’t add that makes all the difference.
As The Kitchn points out, what’s surprising about the HGTV star’s recipe is the lack of leavening agent. That’s right: no baking powder, no baking soda, and no cream of tartar!
The result is a rich, fudge-like brownie that boarders on being too dense. But for chocoholics like us, they’re pure heaven.
“Tiny squares of these brownies are more than enough, and if the idea that a little dark chocolate every day wards off depression…these babies could be downright medicinal,” Drummond muses.
